THE UGLY MIDDLE FROM LEARNING TO DOING BUT BEFORE JUST BEFORE KNOWING

WHERE DID “THE UGLY MIDDLE TERM” COME FROM?

You may wonder where the saying “the ugly middle” comes from; The funny thing is I learned the term from listening to Alex from Create and Go.

But it is so true. I have taken art and design courses off and on my whole life. And have experienced this for me; But never heard it termed this way.

So the Ugly Middle is when you start to learn something and begin to apply those principles, lessons, teaching, etc. Then at some point, it starts to feel like everything you create, write, build, or design may not look as you planned in your mind, or it does look right but doesn’t come out the way you thought.

Or perhaps something looks a little off, but you’re not exactly sure why. It could be that something does not feel right.

NORMAL PART OF THE PROCESS

This is normal, and we call it “The Ugly Middle.”

This is where everything looks and feels like crap. Sorry for using the word crap, but I cannot find a better word to explain it.

IT IS WHAT IT IS, AND WE ALL GO THROUGH IT, INCLUDING MYSELF.

It would help if you embraced the “Ugly Middle” since it is part of the learning process.

 IF YOU EVER FIND YOURSELF:

  • On the wrong road.
  • Feeling derailed.
  • Held back.
  • Treated illy.
  • Unnecessarily frustrated.
  • Without proper training support.
  • Been taken advantage of.

Then it is perfectly ok to readjust look for another job, school, club, program, volunteer opportunities, internship, etc. And in rare situations, if necessary, pursue legal action if bad enough, or there is harassment going on.

MORE ABOUT THE UGLY MIDDLE

The ugly middle is the visual proof of the transition during learning, doing, but before knowing.

It is an essential part of the process, so try to embrace it, have fun with it, don’t get too frustrated with it, and keep re-adjusting your techniques and ideas until something hits and feels right.

CREATIVITY AND MINDSET

I want to clarify something for you. I feel like people don’t talk about this statement enough, and it is something that many people take at face value.

There is a belief system that says only some people are creative. I don’t believe in that thought system.

I believe that thinking comes from a closed mindset. It is also damaging and limits people’s potential.

John Maxwell says popular (common) thinking is usually no thinking at all. And I agree, it is something we are all guilty of.

JUST TO CLARIFY

Falling into popular or common thinking is usually no thinking at all. It is something we are all guilty of but I would like to help you find your creative strengths, explaining my definition of creativity and how I see people use it.

BREAKING AWAY FROM POPULAR THINKING.

Regardless of what “THEY SAY” or “WHAT YOU MAY OR MAY NOT BELIEVE ABOUT YOURSELF.” We are all creative, ALL OF US; some may have more practice tapping into their creativity, some may feel they are not creative at all, and others may seem naturally more gifted.

BUT AS HUMAN BEINGS, WE ARE ALL CREATIVE.

FOR EXAMPLE:

  • Some people use their creativity for the arts (traditional, digital, music, or entertainment fields).
  • Other people use their creativity to solve community, civic, or business problems by creating unique solutions to problems or issues that others may not have thought of.
  • Still, some people use their creativity to create software, life-saving design machines, fight disease, and other life-changing discoveries.
  • And other people are rather gifted in using their creativity for dreaming up, planning, and executing events or experiences that create delightful lifelong memories.

So if you have a belief system that says you are not creative. No more worries, your stumbling block has just shattered if you embrace this truth.

I am telling you this, because it is true.

Creativity should continue developing and nurturing your talents and skillset, gaining the full benefits of your abilities. You got this; you can do this Awesomeness!
